2017 Australian Masters and World Cup

The Australian Masters and World Cup 11th – 13th March 2017 (By Colin Briede)

Venue: Pitt Town, NSW

The venue for the Australian Masters for this year was the Charles Kingsford Smith Model Aircraft Club, a beautiful field at Pitt Town in the Hawkesbury Region of NSW. The field has two excellent grass runways which are smooth and closely cut. This year the Australian Masters, a premier event on the Australian F3A calendar, was combined with the “World Cup” which is an F3A event based in Europe and is mainly aimed at European pilots. There are 16 events on the World Cup calendar throughout the year with pilots attempting to gain points at each competition. The eventual winner is the pilot who has amassed the most points throughout the season. The Australian Masters event is currently the only World Cup event held outside Europe and Britain and so is becoming attractive to pilots who wish to escape the European winter/spring and get some time in the sun and try and accumulate points at the start of the season.

This event also, importantly includes the Australian Team Trials for the next World Championships in Argentina later this year.

The international pilots at this years Masters included:

  • Robin Trumpp (Germany) – Robin was 4th in the World Cup 2016.
  • A.C Glenn (USA)
  • Pete Collinson (USA)
  • Kimiyo Takahashi (Japan)
  • Hamish Galloway (New Zealand)
  • Andrew Palmer (New Zealand)
  • James Danby (New Zealand)

This event also, importantly includes the Australian Team Trials for the next world championships to be held in Argentina later this year and so it attracts most of the top Australian pilots. Included were Glenn Orchard, Dennis Trevassaros, Shane Lysaght and Russel Edwards who have all represented Australia at previous internationals and included pilots from all around Australia. There were 43 pilots competing in the various categories as follows:

  • F3A – 19 pilots
  • Expert - 14 pilots
  • Advanced – 4 pilots
  • Sportsman – 6 pilots.

The stage was set for an explosive and intense competition and so it turned out to be.
Practise for the competition was only permitted at the competition site on the Friday prior to the event and so arrangements were made with the Sydney Radio Control Society to use their field at Wisemans Ferry for competitors who arrived early from interstate and overseas. The SRCS field was only 30 mins drive from Pitt Town which included a ferry crossing of the Hawkesbury river. Those of us who were able to make use of this were delighted at the generosity of the club members in making their facility available and also providing barbeque lunches on both the Wednesday and Thursday. The SCRS field is a set in a valley alongside the Hawkesbury river and the surrounding hills provide a scenic backdrop whilst flying, something which is unusual for those of us from the flatlands of WA.

The weather during the practice days was overcast with light showers and temperatures in the mid -twenties. Beautiful weather for flying. Friday was official practice day which was eagerly attended by the majority of pilots who would be flying over the next few days. There was only one flight line operating so the queue of planes was quite long for the whole of the day with practice flights going until sunset. The wind was quite strong at times, blowing inwards and it tested the pilots’ ability to hold the line. The official model processing was conducted between 3.00pm and 5.30 pm with all F3a pilots’ models being weighed, checked for dimensions and sound checked. All pilots were checked for failsafe settings to ensure the motor would shut down or transition to idle in the case of IC models. The failsafe test should be something that is done at all competitions in the future as a safety precaution. It is something that we do at my own club each time after setting up the model to fly and simply requires that after checking your controls you switch off your transmitter prior to switching off your plane.

Friday evening was wood fired pizza night. The pizzas were delicious and in true pattern fashion a circular queue formed and rotated past the pizza man in perpetual motion until at last everyone had had enough.

The pilots briefing was also held during the evening so that everything was in readiness for the start of the comp on the Saturday morning. The schedule for the comp was to fly 6 rounds of Sportsman, Advanced and Expert on the first two days with those classes finishing on the Sunday. F3A pilots would fly 4 rounds of P17 with the top 10 pilots flying off with 2 rounds of F17 on the Monday. To my knowledge this has never been done before at the Masters and definitely aligned the event with the format used internationally.

The weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday was for light winds with clear skies and temperatures around 30 degrees. Monday was expected to be possible rain with stronger winds. The schedule for Saturday was for 2 rounds of Sportsman & Advanced followed by 2 rounds of F3A, 2 rounds of Expert and a final 2 rounds of Sportsman & Advanced.

Flying got underway at 08:30 in the expected fine conditions and it was good to see the pilots relishing the smooth air with some good flights being completed. There was considerable interest in watching the top fliers in the F3A class. The honours went to A.C Glenn in the first round with Robin Trumpp taking the next round. There were only a few points separating these two in all the rounds with Peter Collinson, Glenn Orchard and Shane Lysaght not far behind.

After a great days flying it was close at the top of all the classes.
So then we get to Saturday night.... The organisers had arranged for a spit roast with all the trimmings to be served at the field. This in itself would have been a great nights entertainment, but little did the competitors expect the night to be dominated by our own James McAllen who became the most renowned auctioneer ever to have graced an Australian Masters! There were many prizes which had been generously supplied by our sponsors, with the major item of an Allure provided by CK Aero which went for a good price. The APA made a handsome profit from the auction and these funds shall be used to further F3A in Australia. One highlight of the auction saw two Irish men turn ½ a potato into a $110.00 profit, it’s a long story and you needed to be there. Well done James and Brian.

Sunday dawned with clear skies and a slight mist first thing in the morning. The winds started out light in the morning and increased during the day, blowing directly into the field. The temperature climbed to 36 degrees.
The flying started with two rounds of expert followed by 2 rounds of F3A, the last two rounds of sportsman and then the last two rounds of expert. Once again it was close at the top of all classes. So we gathered at the end of the days flying to find out who had made it through to the last 10 to compete in the finals in the F3a class. The results for the other classes were already locked in, but not made known until the end of the competition on the Monday. A bit of mystery is always a good thing.

Monday was expected to be windy and rainy, but the gods of F3A banded together and produced another glorious day with very light winds for the finals. There were two rounds of the F17 schedule flown. Prior to the start there were two flights made for the judges to finalise the judging criteria and then it was on. The pilots flew in the opposite order to which they finished after 4 rounds which meant that A.C Glenn and Robin Trumpp flew last. Once again it was a fascinating battle between the top 5 pilots, but the gap between the top two increased. Flying completed by early afternoon and we waited patiently for the final results to be tabulated and the winners announced.

The final results were:
Sportsman: 1st Daniel Wheeler, 2nd Brian Ring, 3rd Con Kyriakides
Advanced: 1st Jason Sparks, 2nd Artur Uzieblo , 3rd David Garle
Expert: 1st Durwhin Dhamaraj , 2nd John Brann , 3rd Chris Henry
F3A: 1st Robin Trumpp, 2nd A.C. Glenn, 3rd Peter Collinson, 4th Glenn Orchard, 5th Shane Lysaght

The team trial results were:
1st Glenn Orchard, 2nd Shane Lysaght, 3rd Dennis Travassaros, 1st reserve Russell Edwards. The Team Manager will be appointed soon.

Congratulations to all the pilots. Everyone who attended and experienced the event was a winner at the end.
I think this event has been the most successful Masters event in recent time. There is always a lot of planning and preparation prior to an event of this size and thanks must go to the APA committee members who were involved in the organisation for the previous 6 months. Congratulations also to Jason Sparks the contest director, who kept everything moving without a hitch. Further thanks need to go individually to Glenn Orchard and Russell Edwards who have travelled overseas at their own expense to participate in competitions in both the USA and Europe and made friends and contacts which have resulted in the surge of interest from international competitors in our Masters event.
